Graduate-level Endorsements & Strands for Iowa Teachers

If you are an Iowa teacher in need of an endorsement, Morningside offers 13 different options. Many students choose to pair an endorsement with the coursework required for a Master of Arts degree. Finally, strands offer groupings of coursework for relevant professional development.

General Information

The 32 credit MAT consists of two parts:

17 hours of required courses from the required core
15 hours of courses to make up the teaching core

The required core will focus on action research in the specific area of your degree. The research will be meaningful and relevant to best practices and align with your area. The EDRS courses must be taken in the order that they are listed, while EDUC 522 and EDUC 612 may be taken at any time during your program.

EDRS 500 Graduate Education Orientation - 0 credits (in development, will be required to complete by the end of your first term of enrollment)
EDRS 502 Educational Research and Theory - 2 credits
EDRS 511-519 Readings in a specific area aligned with your degree - 2 credits
EDRS 602 Designing Action Research - 2 credits (Prerequisite EDRS 502)
EDRS 702 Evaluating Action Research - 2 credits (Prerequisite EDRS 602)
EDRS 760-771 Educational Research for the Educator, specific area aligned with your degree - 3 credits (Prerequisite EDRS 702 - Only available in the fall and spring)
EDUC 522 Instructional Technology - 3 credits
EDUC 612 Cultural and Ethical Issues - 3 credits

Teachers may choose 15 credit hours toward completion of a designated emphasis area. The available courses that fit your specific area will be listed in Degree Progress. The 15 hours may also be used to towards an Iowa teaching endorsement.

All MAT’s will require at least 12 hours of coursework for the teaching core from your focus area. The Morningside course options will be listed in Degree Progress. An additional 3 hours of electives can be used from transfer or educational partner
