Internships
Our internship program is extremely successful with more internship openings than we are able to place. Students have taken positions with congressional offices, within federal government, working on political campaigns, at non-profits, national advocacy organizations, and much more.
Travel
You will have the opportunity to travel regionally, nationally, and even internationally for professional conferences, industry field trips, or May Term courses. Travel grants and special scholarship eligibility may be available.
Research & Active Learning
You are encouraged to pursue independent study and research projects. Past research has included international law, Congress and the presidency, human rights and women’s rights, and much more. You may also have the opportunity to present findings at the Morningside University Palmer Research Symposium, the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), or at regional and national events.
FEATURED COURSES
REQUIRED
An introductory lecture/discussion course that studies the roles of the US in the world and traces the political, intellectual, economic, social, and cultural development of various regions of the world since 1945.
REQUIRED
An introduction to the politics and institutions of the federal government, including its relationship to state and local government. Issues addressed include: the constitution; branches of government; federalism; mediating institutions (e.g., media, social movements, political parties, elections, interest groups); contemporary political controversies and policy areas.
ELECTIVE
This course studies the relationship between politics (both international and domestic) and economics. Topics include: trade regimes; exchange rates; macroeconomic policy; globalization of finance, production, and consumption; trade blocs, development; industrialization; North-South issues; sustainable development; economic interdependence.
ELECTIVE
This course studies contemporary international law through the study of cases and selective international treaties. The topics of the course include the evolving role of the nation-state in international law, the rise of the individual and non-governmental organizations in international law. Additionally, we will study the United Nations and a selection of intergovernmental regional organizations within the context of contemporary events. This is a Research Seminar (RS) course, which incorporates the ethics of the profession with the completion of a major research paper.
